Morocco's far east or the Empty Quarter is rarely visited by tourists and retains a unique feel for travellers in this remote region.
Starting at the port of Tanger Med we first head to Chefchaouen, the blue city, for our first night and a chance to explore its fabulous medina. The following day we head east through the Rif Mountains to the north edge of the Rekkam Plateau.
Now we start the off road section continuing east towards the Algerian border then turn south across Chott Tigri. Along the route we visit abandoned forts built buy the French Foreign Legion, see prehistoric rock carving and explore the remains of the railway to Timbuktu.
Arriving in the far south east corner of Morocco we spend a bit of time exploring the old border town of Figuig before turning west across the bottom of the Plateau to the best campsite in Morocco. The route now turns north passing nomad camps as we head towards the Middle Atlas mountains and back to Chefchaouen for a final night before returning to Europe.
Vehicles on this tour will need a range of 700km to cover the distance between fuel stops. Accommodation will be mostly wildcamps with occasional formal campsites.
